Environmentally friendly energy and heating production in Todtmoos
- a contribution to sustainable climate protection
Everyone is currently talking about climate change. The health resort Todtmoos has made the task of contributing to the protection of the climate an urgent priority. This is achieved by a modern biomass heat supply station from the SWL company, based in Bernau, where currently almost 1 million litres of heating oil are replaced by the renewable energy source wood. Additionally 7 hydroelectric power stations provide almost 10% of the community’s electricity.
As a result not only the community’s available resources are used, but the CO2 emissions can be reduced by 3000t each year. Our intact nature, beautiful Black Forest landscape, healing climate and healthy air are our most important tourist assets. All this needs to be preserved and everyone can make a contribution to ensure that our future guests will also benefit. The Todtmoos rehabilitation centre, Wehrawald Clinic, as well as some living accommodations and small shops and most communal houses are connected to the central heating network. With 77% of area within the community boundaries made up of forest the supply of woodchips is guaranteed. Todtmoos takes up a leading role for environmental protection through the increasing usage of renewable resources and the power of the water, which we continue to improve and extend even further.
Todtmoos hydroelectric power
Already during the 20th century, thanks to the initiative from the Todtmoos citizens, hydroelectric power stations were built in the unique landscape in the Todtmoos health resort region, which blend into the surroundings. Environmentally friendly power is produced from clear mountain water, pure renewable hydroelectric power, which conserves the environment and helps to protect the valuable resources. The hydroelectric power offers a method of energy production with no combustion residue, no noise pollution and no harmful emissions. The CO2 emission reductions help to offset the global climatic change. The 7 hydroelectric power stations produce approx. 900,000kW/h in an average year and save the global climate approx. 900 tonnes CO2 (based on the national power station mix).
The “Höflesäge” facility run by the Maier family from Todtmoos-Rütte shown here produces approximately 120,000 KW per year.
